Gunner's Mate (GM) Navy Rate Patch 1st-3rd Class
This is the appropriate rating patch for US Navy personnel with the rating of Gunner's Mate GM1, GM2, or GM3. Navy rates are only sold as first class rates and can be cut to second or third class.
The Gunner's Mate (GM) rating is one of the three original ratings created when the Navy introduced the rating system in 1797. The Gunner's Mate rating (abbreviated as GM) is a designation given by the Bureau of Naval Personnel to enlisted members who either satisfactorily complete initial Gunner's Mate "A" school training, or who "strike" for the rating as a deck seaman by showing competence in the field of ordnance.
Gunner's Mate training focuses on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Naval guns and missile launchers as well as a strong emphasis on basic explosives, guidance and tracking systems, small arms, Naval ammunition classification, and safety. Upon completion of this basic training, enlisted members often continue on to a specialized "C" school, where they learn a particular weapons system.
The U.S. Navy Enlisted Left Sleeve Rating Patch is Swiss-Loomed on midnight navy-blue wool serge material. By tradition the Petty Officer 1st Class patch must be hemmed to the proper rank for Petty Officer 2nd Class and Petty Officer 3rd Class.
