NATO ISAF Afghanistan Ribbon
The NATO ISAF Afghanistan ribbon is authorized for wear by U.S. Military personnel that served with the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan for a total of 30 days, continuously or cumulatively, since July 31, 2006.
The ISAF was established in December 2001 by Resolution 1386 of the United Nations Security Council with the main purpose of training the Afghan National Security Forces and assisting in the rebuilding of key Afghanistan institutions. The United States, United Kingdom, and other NATO member states have contributed troops to the ISAF, which in addition to rebuilding efforts has also been engaged in the 2001-present war with insurgent groups.
NATO ribbons are authorized for wear by U.S. service personnel. While each NATO medal has a corresponding campaign clasp, the US Military prohibits the official wearing of the clasp. Instead, U.S. Military personnel are authorized to wear service stars to indicate multiple awards.
International awards like the NATO ISAF Afghanistan Ribbon are worn after all official United States decorations, but before all foreign decorations.
