Product Description

Our P38 Can Opener is the same P38 that fought in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. It is made of stainless steel and 1.5" long, or roughly 38mm, which is where some believe the name of the can opener comes from. It is also said to be named after the Lockheed P-38 Lightning figther plane for its speed in opening cans. Some US Army sources have said the name comes from the roughly 38 punctures to open a c-ration. The P-38 was originally designed for the K-rations and later C-rations issued to soldiers. The military stopped issuing the P-38 and P-51 can openers with the introduction of MRE rations in the 1980s.

The P-38 Can Opener would be a great gift idea and a wonderful addition to your military collection.

P51 US Army Can Opener
The P-51 can opener is the larger cousin to the P-38 "John Wayne" can opener. This is an authentic stainless steel reproduction of the US Army can opener that was issued from WWII through the 1980s. It is 2" long.

While the origin of the P-38 and P-51 can openers is unknown, they are said to be named after the P-38 and P-51 Mustang Fighter planes. The can openers are coincidentally also roughly 38mm and 51mm long.
